Our six step guide to installing your own lawn

1. Plan your layout

Planning your artificial lawn is essential to get the best results, but it doesn’t need to be difficult. Here’s a few things to remember:

  • Artificial grass comes in 2m and 4m width rolls – choose the right one for you
  • The grass pile has a direction to it. We would recommend you lay it with the grass leaning either towards the house or seating area.
  • By drawing a diagram of your layout you’ll get the best results. Try to minimise the number of joins you’ll need.

2. Dig up grass and top-soil

Using a shovel, dig up any real grass and top-soil that’s in the area you want your artificial lawn to be in, making sure the ground is even and flat.

3. Add a top layer of sand

Add a 30mm deep layer of sharp sand or Grano to help even out the surface further, giving your artificial grass a good and solid base.

4. Roll your grass out

Line up your joints neatly and connect them using our self-adhesive tape which connects the backing of the grass. One roll of tape will connect a 4 metre long join.

5. Cut to shape and fix in place

Fold back your artificial grass to the boundary and cut the backing with a sharp Stanley knife so that it fits your space perfectly. Using flat head Fixing Pins, hammer them into place around the perimeter of your artificial grass to secure it in place. Alternatively, you could use an alternative edging system such as Steel Edges or VertEdge.

6. Brush your grass

To finish off, give your artificial grass a good brush before getting the deckchairs out, and enjoying your new, low maintenance garden space.

These instructions are for laying artificial grass onto a grassy area, but if you are laying onto tarmac or concrete, the process is easier – just miss out steps 2 and 3 because you don’t need any groundwork to lay grass onto tarmac or concrete.

Artificial grass accessories

ZeoZorb

For use in combination with our Pet 28 grass product, ZeoZorb helps to prevent pet urine smells by capturing the ammonia and only releasing it in the rain for it to be washed away. Truly a miracle product!

Steel Edging

Neaten up your lawn edges by installing this around the circumference of your artificial grass. They come in a pack of 5 and are 1075mm long.

VertEdge

Another way to perfect your artificial lawn edges. By curving the edges of your artificial lawn over the edging and gluing it down into it, you’ll be left with a softer, finished look, than if you use the steel edging.

Jointing Tape

To keep your artificial lawn in place it’s important that you join the pieces together. To do this, you’ll need some artificial grass jointing tape. We sell it by the metre.

Fixing Pins

To stop your new lawn from moving, slipping out of place or flipping over, fixing pins are a cheap way of securing the perimeter of your lawn down.

Aquabond Jointing Adhesive

The perfect glue for bonding artificial grass seams to jointing tapes and solid sub-surfaces.

Rubber Edging Strips

If you’re installing artificial grass indoors, 2 metre rubber edging strips are ideal for finishing off the look.

Shockpad Underlay

For domestic installations we have 10mm Shockpad underlay boards which are designed to soften and cushion the surface. This is perfect for kids who like to play rough and tumble in the garden.

Geotex Weed Membrane

Artificial grass has drainage holes that weeds can grow through given the opportunity. By laying down the Geotex weed membrane you can eradicate this problem.
