One of the biggest elements of differentiation in artificial grass is pile height, which is essentially the lengths of the blades. This coupled with a light brown ‘thatch’ helps produce the overall thickness. Different types of artificial grass also have different types of blades, and these can change the way light reflects off the grass, the softness of the product and how quickly the grass will spring back into position.

Some people like a short pile height which looks like the lawn has just been mown. Others prefer very thick thatches in the artificial grass that add extra cushioning. Some of our most popular artificial grasses are our mid-range grasses that are able to combine neatness with softness.

There is a general correlation between pile height and cost, although this isn’t necessarily always the case. Tall pile heights include more material and arguably, more complexity. This means that they can be softer as they can physically incorporate more cushioning. However, personal preference is usually the primary distinguishing factor between different artificial grasses and an individual’s subjective opinion is of paramount importance.
