How to Care For an Artificial Grass Sports Pitch

For many schools, sports clubs and major sporting establishments it is a legal requirement to ensure facilities provided are fit for purpose and are not hazardous to users.

For this reason, when installing Nomow artificial grass in a high wear and tear area such as a sports pitch, it’s a good idea to undertake a few small maintenance tasks to ensure it stays in a safe and playable condition all year round.

Read on for our guide to caring for an artificial grass sports pitch…

Regular brushing – Giving your artificial sports pitch a good brush on a regular basis will keep the pile open and remove any dust, dirt, leaves or litter that may have built up on the surface. Doing this ensures that rainwater can drain through easily. Lack of brushing can lead to a build up of debris and cause water to ‘pond’ on your sports pitch.

Repaint line markings – Depending on what kind of system you have used (woven/inlaid/painted lines), line markings can sometimes start to fade and become worn due to wear and tear. If this is the case, you may want to think about repainting your playing surface to ensure its playability.

Moss/algae treatment – Unfortunately, even the most well maintained pitches can suffer an attack of moss or algae at some point throughout their lives. Check for build up in any areas that don’t see as much activity (usually near fence lines or pitch corners) and treat affected areas with a spray. Moss and algae can become slippy and hazardous to players so it’s important you make regular checks and treat as quickly as possible.

Repairs/replacements – While Nomow artificial grass is guaranteed for 5 years, you may eventually need to replace or repair any areas which become damaged due to overuse. Carpets can sometimes become unglued with heavy wear but can be easily repaired with jointing adhesive.

Sand treatment – Sand filled grasses such as Challenger 24 can help achieve a natural ball bounce and increase durability. For heavy use areas such as sports pitches, it may be worth giving these types of turf an an annual renovation. This comprises of agitating the top layers of sand to reduce compaction and ensure pile stays upright.
