Beginners Guide to Gardening
You may be dreaming of a beautiful, lush garden, but if you’re a gardening novice it can feel quite daunting to start with.
If you’re moving into a new house or starting gardening for the first time then read on for our 8 valuable tips to help you succeed.
1. How will your garden grow?
Begin by deciding what you want out of your garden. Are you looking to create a kids play haven or a small outdoor plot to grow veg? Once you’ve decided what your garden will function as, you’ll be in a much better position to make decisions.
2. Start off slow

3. Make it manageable
Consider how much you are willing/able to take on. If you want a great looking garden without maintenance then why not consider using artificial grass. With a fake lawn, you can concentrate on tending to flowerbeds and vegetable patches without wasting precious time or money on natural lawn maintenance.
4. Sun vs. shade
Before you start planting it’s useful to establish whether your garden gets full sun or partial shade. A full sun garden is ideal for growing vegetables, and most flowering perennials and annuals, getting around 6 or more hours of direct sunlight a day. Partial, or full shade gardens may prove a bit tougher, only getting sun around midday.
5. Invest in quality
Investing in good quality tools, equipment and plants will be much more cost-effective in the long run. Cheap tools may not last you longer than the season and the same goes for bargain-basement plants.
6. Useful tools
When you take up gardening you should invest in a few staple tools:
- Trowel
- Secateurs
- Rake
- Spade
- Hose
7. Easy to grow plants
Fill your garden with a few tried and tested, easy to grow plants until you feel more comfortable in your growing skills. Trees and shrubs are easy growers while garden favourites such as sunflowers, sweet peas, fuchsias and pansies provide good ground cover and plenty of colours.
8. Ask for help
A good gardening how-to book will always come in handy and there are plenty of resources online to help you out. Reach out to more experienced neighbours and family members, as they will often only be too pleased to give you a hand.
